Akershus Castle
The mediaeval castle had an impregnable position on the outermost point
of Akersneset, with the sea on the one side, marshland on the other and
huge walls towards the north.
The fortress was built by the year 1308. It withstood a siege by the Duke
Erik of Sweden.
Daily life in this mediaeval fortress must have been rather uncomfortable
by modern standards. There were large open fireplaces and carpets to cover
the tiled floors, yet behind the thick walls with the small windows it
must have been damp, dark, and cold.
